    Creating gameplay mechanics with deformable characters

    This paper presents how soft body simulation can create deformable characters and physics-based game mechanics that result in a more varied gameplay experience. A framework was implemented that allows the creation of a fully deformable soft body character within a games application where the simulation model properties could be altered at runtime to create gameplay mechanics based on varying the deformation of the character. The simulation model was augmented to allow appropriate methods of player control that complemented the character design and its ability to deform. It was found that while the implementation of deformation-based mechanics created a more varied gameplay experience, the underlying simulation model allowed for a limited amount of deformation before becoming unstable. The ffectiveness of the framework is demonstrated by the resulting mechanics that are not possible through the use of previous methods

    A ducted wind turbine simulation model for building simulation

    Power production is shifting away from centralized generation plants to production of heat and power at the point of demand. A technology that may play a part in this shift is the ducted wind turbine (DWT). The emergence of small building integrated micro turbines opens up the possibility of utilizing the differential pressures occurring around buildings for local power production. This paper describes work to develop and test a simple mathematical model of a ducted wind turbine and its integration within a building simulation tool. A case study in which the simulation model will be used to analyse of the likely power output from a building incorporating ducted wind turbines within the façade is also presented

    With increasing targets being set for renewable-derived electricity generation, wind power is currently the preferred technology. It is widely accepted that due to the stochastic nature of wind, there is an upper limit to the capacity that can be accommodated within the electricity network before power quality is impeded. This paper demonstrates the potential of tidal energy as a predictable renewable technologies that can be developed for base load power generation and thus minimise the risk of compromising future power quality

    Hartley Site (FaNp-19) : interpreting a transitional Avonlea/Old Women's faunal assemblage

    The Hartley site (FaNp-19) is a Late Prehistoric multi-component habitation site containing a Mortlach and an Avonlea/Old Women's occupation. The faunal assemblage from the Avonlea/Old Women's occupation contains at least 22 species of vertebrates and at least four genera of invertebrates. These materials have been analyzed to establish the seasonality of the occupation as well as the palaeoenvironmenat and biogeography of the site area. Analyses of the faunal material helped to establish that the occupation was a single event. The occupation began in the late fall/early winter and continued through to the late winter/early spring. The environment of the region appears to have been similar to the modem environment although the site area itself may have been slightly damper. Several factors, including the site positioning and the wide diversity of faunal species, may relate to the season of occupation. Faunal assemblages from sites such as Amisk, Long Creek, Lucky Strike, Tschetter, Lebret and Miniota in Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba show some similarities to the Hartley site remains. It is proposed that the procurement and settlement strategies in this region reflect the season of occupation. Sites with a winter seasonality are associated with areas of trees such as the Aspen Parkland or valley complexes and are often occupied for extended periods of time. These occupations may begin with a single large bison kill, but this may be followed through the winter by smaller attritional style kills. Sites which are occupied into the spring will exhibit a particularly diverse range of species

    Design and testing of a contra-rotating tidal current turbine

    A contra-rotating marine current turbine has a number of attractive features: nearzero reactive torque on the support structure, near-zero swirl in the wake, and high relative inter-rotor rotational speeds. Modified blade element modelling theory has been used to design and predict the characteristics of such a turbine, and a model turbine and test rig have been constructed. Tests in a towing tank demonstrated the feasibility of the concept. Power coefficients were high for such a small model and in excellent agreement with predictions, confirming the accuracy of the computational modelling procedures. High-frequency blade loading data were obtained in the course of the experiments. These show the anticipated dynamic components for a contra-rotating machine. Flow visualization of the wake verified the lack of swirl behind the turbine. A larger machine is presently under construction for sea trials

    A contra-rotating marine current turbine on a flexible mooring : development of a scaled prototype

    The contra-rotating marine current turbine concept developed by the Energy Systems Research Unit at the University of Strathclyde is aimed at extracting energy in a wide range of water depths by 'flying' a neutrally-buoyant device from a flexible, tensioned mooring. After successful proof of concept turbine trials, the development programme has moved on to investigate the performance of a scaled prototype of the complete system incorporating the turbine, submersible contra-rotating generator and mooring. The turbine/generator assembly has been tested in a towing tank, and the entire system is now undergoing sea trials. An investigation into turbine wake development (an area in which it is hoped that the contra-rotating turbine will have uniquely beneficial properties) has recently begun. Small single-rotor model turbines have been deployed in a flume. Trends observed so far are in accordance with those observed by other researchers
